Male Urinary Incontinence - An Overview

Urinary incontinence is the loss of bladder control leading to the involuntary leakage or loss of urine. This involuntary urine leakage is common among men and women. Most of the time the condition is treatable with non pharmacological and non invasive methods.

In men, urinary incontinence is often associated with conditions like:

  • Prostate enlargement
  • Prostate surgery
  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • Parkinson's disease

This is not an exhaustive list. Identifying the cause of incontinence will help determine the right intervention.

A doctor at the workplace shows an anatomic model of the urine bladder illustrating dribbling incontinence.

Conditions for Urinary Urgency in Men

Bladder control issues can either be short-term or long-term and can occur due to several reasons.

  • Enlarged prostate glands can eventually cause urinary urgency in men and involuntary urine discharge.
  • Stress incontinence can also occur due to the removal of the prostate gland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the treatment be done by the patients themselves?

Yes, it is possible under supervision of a certified therapist. The patients should be able to understand and follow our instructions to implement the technology, which is quite user-friendly.

If a patient cannot walk in, what are the available treatment options?

There are two options. We can ship the device to the patient. Our therapist can then connect via online meeting platforms and offer virtual consultation and therapy. We also provide care at the patient’s residence if it is within the radius of 10 Km from the JOGO Clinic.

How helpful is JOGO therapy? What are the other methods used?

The JOGO-DTx (Digital therapeutics) leverages neural plasticity and is proven by scientific research. The therapy comprises an easy-to-set-up device that would help determine if the muscle is tight or weak. We also recommend pelvic floor exercises and stress relaxation techniques to strengthen or relax the pelvic muscles. Mental stress, tension, and anger can also cause tightness in muscles because it is a natural reflex action. Therefore, stress relaxation can also be beneficial in many cases.

What are the common incontinence-related issues faced by men, and what are the medical solutions to address them?

Incontinence problems in men are mostly related to issues in the prostate gland. These include:

  • Prostatitis (painful inflammation of the prostate gland)
  • Enlarged prostate gland (leading to  benign prostatic hyperplasia)
  • After surgical removal of enlarged prostate gland

The medical solutions include tablets, syrups, or patches. However, it has been observed that medications to treat an overactive bladder are often responsible for cognitive decline6 in most men over 65. To understand what will work best for you, speak to your doctor.

Are Kegel exercises and JOGO Therapy the same?

No, JOGO treatments and Kegel exercises are not the same. Kegel exercises are a part of the JOGO treatment. Kegel exercises alone are not enough for complete recovery for most of the patients.
